Have You Had a Good Day, Then?

It was a very busy morning today. My younger son had not been well recently and I had to take him to the doctor’s for a follow-up appointment. Good news was, he fully recovered and was fit for school. Bad news was – he was fully recovered and had to go to school. ‘But I still feel sick, mummy! And I am tired, and school is boring, and we never learn anything anyway!’ – you get the picture… So I took a deep breath, put my imaginary ear-muffs on to block out the noise and delivered my protesting offspring to school. He was not happy, I can tell you that.

I got home hoping for some peace and quiet. Quiet it was, but not terribly peaceful. Mailbox full of stuff that apparently could not wait another minute, work to do and a load of laundry to run between grabbing a cup of coffee and answering yet another email. At least it was quiet. At least for a while – a rather short while, I might add…

It started with the phone ringing ten minutes into my email-busting session: ‘Do you know that you may be eligible for a grant to replace your boiler?’, a man asked. ‘I don’t need a new boiler, thank you’, I answered. ‘So when are you planning to replace it?’ the man carried on. ‘As I said, I don’t need a new boiler’, I repeated. He wasn’t going to give up: ‘How old is your boiler, then?’.  I don’t like being rude, but at that point I just hang up. I might have said ‘good bye’ first, but I’m not sure.

I went back to the computer. Managed fifteen minutes and the phone rang again. This time something about mis-sold Payment Protection Insurance and compensation I could claim. I don’t even remember how many times I told those people that I had never, ever purchased any PPI cover, so surely would not qualify for compensation? They still keep ringing.

I decided that I had to ignore the phone for the rest of the day, or I would not get anything done. The phone rang a few more times, but I tried pretending that I could not hear it. This worked quite well until the call about solar panels, when, rather than just give up, someone decided to leave a long message on my answering machine. Unfortunately, I haven’t figured out yet how to turn off the volume on this piece of advanced technology, so I had to listen through to the bitter end. I think next time I am just going to switch off the phone completely.

By the time I got round to doing my main bit of work for the day, it was getting late and dangerously close to school pick-up time. I was determined to finish everything before I had to go – I hate leaving things unfinished. It takes me ages to remember what I was about to do when I had to take a break and to get back into the flow.

I decided to take a risk. Surely, it would not matter if I were a few minutes late for the school pick-up? I usually have to wait for my son while he is talking to all his friends before he even notices I am waiting, and then another few minutes for him to finish all those important conversations. So hopefully, he wouldn’t even notice me being late…

That was a bad decision. As I approached the gate, my son walked out – I smiled at him, but he dismissed me with a rather stroppy wave of his hand. I was late and he noticed. Children should not have to wait for their parents. Ever. School was boring as expected. He was tired (he knew he would be) and starving. Did he not have lunch? Turns out, he did, but it was rubbish. So we went home in silence.

I offered to switch on the telly with my sons favourite cartoons on (bad parenting, I know) and he cheered up after a while. Everything was going well until his brother came home from school and started saying how brilliant his day had been  – he got to dissect a squid and explode a melon. All duly supervised by his science teacher. ‘It’s not fair that he gets to do fun stuff at school and I don’t!’…

I did manage to load my washing machine this morning, but I’m not quite sure whether I pressed the ‘ON’ button…
